Thriving in Body, Mind, and Spirit: A Biblical Approach to Health

Prioritizing physical health doesn’t mean obsessing over appearances. True thriving begins when we pursue a strong, peaceful life rooted in faith. This holistic view recognizes the deep connection between physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

A healthy individual is better equipped to be an active and vibrant member of both their church and community. When our bodies and minds are cared for, we’re more capable of serving others, building meaningful relationships, sharing our faith, and worshiping with joy and energy.

But where do we start?

In today’s world, we’re flooded with health information—so much so that it becomes overwhelming. The good news? God has already given us everything we need. His Word is full of wisdom—even when it comes to how we care for our bodies.

Let’s go back to the beginning, to the story of creation, and uncover a few foundational principles for caring for the incredible bodies God designed.

1. Let There Be Light
“Then God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” – Genesis 1:3

Modern culture often warns us to avoid the sun—but we may have overcorrected. Light is essential to our well-being. It regulates our circadian rhythm, or internal body clock, which influences everything from hormone balance to metabolism and sleep.

Practical tips:

  • Step outside first thing in the morning to naturally kickstart your cortisol and wakefulness.
  • Soak in natural sunlight throughout the day—it’s the best source of vitamin D.
  • Limit screen time at night. Blue light confuses your brain into staying alert when it should be winding down. Ditch the phone an hour before bed to support melatonin production and restful sleep.

2. Water and Land: Nature’s Balance
“Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.” – Genesis 1:9

The Earth is 70% water. Our bodies? Around 60%. Clean, hydrating water is vital to life.

What you can do:

  • Drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day. (For example, a 150 lb person needs about 75 oz daily.)
  • Get outside. Breathe fresh air. Walk barefoot in the grass. Dig in the soil. These practices have been shown to reduce inflammation and support gut health—simple, powerful gifts God built into creation.

3. Plants and Animals: Food as Fuel

“The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit… And God saw that it was good.” – Genesis 1:12

God created plants and animals as food sources for us. Each offers unique nutrients to help our bodies thrive. The debate over diet types (keto, vegan, paleo, etc.) can be endless. Instead of getting caught up in the noise, start here:

Keep it simple:

  • Eat whole foods. If God made it, it’s probably good for you.
  • Avoid processed, man-made “foods.” If it comes in a box with ingredients you can’t pronounce, it’s not God’s best.

4. Be Fruitful and Multiply: The Power of Community
“Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth…” – Genesis 1:28

God created us for connection. Community is not optional—it’s essential. In today’s world, technology and busyness often isolate us. Don’t let screens and schedules rob you of relationships.

Take action:

  • Find your tribe. Engage in church life, friendships, and family.
  • Be present. Love the people God has placed in your life. Your mental and emotional health will benefit deeply.

5. Rest: A Sacred Rhythm
“And on the seventh day God rested.” – Genesis 2:2

Rest is not laziness—it’s a divine rhythm. Sleep isn’t just nice to have; it’s a non-negotiable for optimal health. Poor sleep disrupts everything from hormones to digestion.

To honor God with your rest:

  • Stick to a consistent sleep schedule.
  • Unplug before bed to calm your nervous system.
  • Treat rest as holy. It’s part of how God designed us.

6. Honoring God with Our Bodies

Caring for our health isn’t about earning grace—it’s about responding to grace. When we care for our bodies, we reflect our gratitude for the incredible gift of life and health God has given us.

“So, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31

Let’s embrace the simple wisdom of God’s creation. Step into the light. Drink the water. Eat the food He made. Rest well. Love deeply. And live wholly—to the glory of God.
